I am a runner, hear me roar!!!

I am a runner.  I run 5k (3.5 miles ish) 3 times a week. Not a big deal?  Actually it is.

Two years ago I couldnt run for 5 minutes. And 5 years ago I was more than 90lb heavier than I am now. So to me its a huge deal…and I’m very proud of myself.

I run obsessively.  I rarely miss a run and run regardless of weather, illness or date (I even ran on Boxing Day). Me and my fiancé even do runs on our holidays – we’ve done runs in France, Spain & Denmark so far!!! It has changed my life…as well as my body – in the last year my weight hasn’t changed much but I’ve gone from a UK 12/14 to a size 10.  My anxiety (which I’ve suffered from for as long as I can remember) has pretty much disappeared and I feel for the first time, totally in control of my body and health.

But today lets talk clothing – what to wear for running when you love your clothes.  Fashion is one thing but running gear needs to be fit for purpose, so I stick one one brand – Karrimor.  I buy it via Sports Direct where it is greatly reduced and in my opinion its just great – many runners swear by the brand.  Its tight fitting but great!

On my feet I wear Puma Descendent’s – I have 2 pairs I alternate, one older black and pink pair and a newer white and pink pair (more for summer) plus supportive/padded running socks.

THE KIT:

Fitted long sleeve running top – this is great as a base layer or as a top when its a bit colder. For summer, short sleeve versions are available (plus vests for the 3 days in the year its hot enough 😄).  Whats great about them? Bright colour and reflective stripes for visibility, mesh panels to help the body breathe and a tight fit that wont stretch or go out of shape.

Running tights – yes they are a bit scary if you have a few lumps and bumps you want to hide, but my view is, if anyone dared to make a comment youre the one running and theyre the ones sitting on their lardy asses! They are strangely flattering actually and where they are tight they act like shapewear.  Whats great about them?  Zipped back pocket, reflective details, zips at ankles.

Hat and headband –  whether is cold or hot these do the job.  A hat is imperative in the winter and I love the headband to cover my ears on windy days when my hair is tied back. Whats great about them?  Reversible hat (pink is great for visibilty), a tight fit that wont stretch or go out of shape.

Underwear – you definitely can’t start running without a sports bra!  That and trainers are the two things you can’t do without. I personally find Berlei bras really good and use a non wired version that you can also wear as a crop top. High impact is definitely the way to go. Obviously depends on your bust size but as I’ve still got D cup boobs I need them contained! Pants wise I’m still working on finding the perfect solution LOL. Some runners adocate going commando but I’m not so sure.  My view currently is to wear seamless high waist pants that wont ride up or be too fussy – not sexy but hey, youre working out.  Plus your bum is going to look a lot sexier in the long run!!!

Vest & cropped leggings – in the summer I go lightweight as I can’t stand being too hot. Capri leggings or shorts are perfect and a vest replaces my normal runnung tops.

Whats great about them?  Breathable panels, zipped back pocket.

Trainers –  Puma Descendents.  Whats great about them?  Lightweight, supportive, breathable mesh toe section.

Fitness clothes do not have to be expensive – my last pair of trainers cost less than £20 and the running pieces start from around £4 at Sports Direct.  A word of warning though, once you buy a few bits you just cant stop building up your running wardrobe!

If I’ve inspired you to try running at all I’d recommend the c25k app which trains you from walking to doing a full 5k run (and beyond).  I was terrified but it really works. Give it a go, it might change your life!

Jumpsuit Joy

You’ve got to love a jumpsuit.  Its the easiest thing to wear (well, apart from if youre rushing to the loo!).

A patterned version can be slightly unflattering if you are curvy so I pick ones that pull in at the waist or wear a belt with them.

I also like this one as its buttoned up so you can wear it shirt-like or undone with a vest or t-shirt underneath as I have today.

Primark jumpsuit #ootd via always a blue sky girl blogI am wearing a Primark ‘pyjama’ style jumpsuit in size 12.  I have had to shorten it (being 5’2″ is such fun) but apart from that it is as bought.  Underneath I have a white t-shirt and have co-ordinated it with white shoes.   If it was evening, heels would look great but this is a working/running around after kids day!Primark jumpsuit #ootd via always a blue sky girl blog  Primark jumpsuit #ootd via always a blue sky girl blog

Bio Clinica Plus

A few weeks back the folks at Tower Health were kind enough to send me a jar of Medosan Bio Clinica Plus beauty treatment to try out and review.  As you know, my quest to look younger than my 42 years is a real one and a good moisturiser/anti aging product is key in that.

So, what does the product info say –

Bio Clinica Plus is perfectly suited to the needs of your skin. Composed of a combination of valuable mineral extracts from pearls, silk and crystals along with clinically proven plant substances. An anti-age product that protects you from:

  • Dry skin
  •  lose of elasticity
  • the forming of wrinkles
  • age related redness
  • fatigued eyes

Bio Clinica anti-wrinkle cream contains valuable collagen, aloe vera, allantoines, bisabolol, soy and sesame oil, which can contribute to tightening and firming the skin.  Giving you skin the care that will bring out the full beauty of your face.

Sounds good!  But does it make a difference?

The first thing I liked about it is the extracts of pearls, silk and crystals within its formula.  The formula is white and creamy and definitely lifts and freshens your complexion when you put it on.

Secondly it smells lovely, so much so my partner remarked I smelt nice…always a plus!

Its also in a nice container – sounds picky but I like my face creams to look nice as I often have them showing on my bathroom shelf.

So far, so good…

I chose to use it both morning and night, using a smaller amount in the day as a quick skin refresh and then a bigger amount on my face and neck before bed.

It didnt leave any residue and felt great on my skin. After two weeks use I reviewed the difference in my skin:

My skin looks more even in tone and the fine lines on my forehead have definitely lessened.

The lines around my mouth are not so pronounced and dont look as deep.   My neck also feels smoother.

Not a bad result for two weeks use!  I will continue to use it especially with the effect on my fine lines and look forward to continued results.

Priced at £9.95 for 50ml its a good price point and I reckon would last 4-6 weeks depending on how much you used.  Definitely one to have in the bathroom cabinet I think.  You can buy it here.

Tell me about it, stud…

I do love a bit of detail in an outfit – a flash of metallic, a statement necklace or a great bit of embellishment.  In the words of a vamped up Sandy in Grease…”tell me about it, stud…” and studs are what we have today!!!

M&Co. rainbow print blouse

I’ve been blogging about my favourite pieces from the M&Co. summer 2015 range and today is the turn of their rainbow print blouse priced at £29.

I LOVE this top!  The print is perfect, it has a cute slip underneath and is light and floaty.  It is cut to be slightly longer at the back and has button details at the sleeves.  I am wearing a size 10 and I’d say its average sizing. M&Co rainbow print blouse outfit of the day #ootd always a Blue Sky Girl blog

I’ve made a slight change to the fit of this blouse as it had a small stitch at the bust line holding the front more tightly together.  Being a bit busty, this wasnt flattering on me so I undid it so the top wraps accross my front (and ample bosom) freely.

I am wearing it with a simple gold necklace, skinny jeans and yellow wedge shoes.  Perfect for the sunny, yet not hot yet weather.  I just know this blouse is going to become one of my favourites, after all who doesnt love a rainbow?

Styling statement trousers

Wearing a strong pattern can be a bit of a challenge.  I have a great pair of trousers from Matalan but although I love them I sometimes struggle to style them.

So how do you style a pair of very strongly patterned statement tousers?

The key is if you go patterned on the bottom keep it plain on the top.  The shape of these trousers is a cigarette pant shape – slim fitting with a flat waistband.  A very 1960’s inspired look.  Matalan statement trousers via Always a Blue Sky Girl blog

I co-ordinated the trousers with a cobalt blue shirt and jumper combo plus nude pointy flats for a bit of glamour.

I carried on the slightly 60s vibe with full hair and blue eye make-up. Matalan statement trousers via Always a Blue Sky Girl blog

Dita Von Teese – Starlift lingerie

A couple of days ago Dita Von Teese ran two photos one after the other on her Instagram feed showing one of her new lingerie lines.

I just love the fact there are showing the range on two different body shapes without any fuss or fanfare.  Each look is slightly different but still strong, sexy and feminine and fits to the Dita Van Teese brand look.

Her lingerie is just gorgeous and is quite clearly is designed for any girl who wants it.  Its not ‘plus size’, its not ‘main range’, its just the range.

I think wearing pretty/sexy/fun lingerie makes all woman feel good.  It definitely works for me. We are all different shapes and sizes and 99% of us do not have model bodies – if we did we’d be all be working as models.  Its lucky really, who would do all the other jobs?!?

The sets look great regardless…and thats the point. Thanks Dita x

Meow!!!

Its a busyish Tuesday, I’ve got work to do, my son is still off school on his Easter break, the sun is shining and its a jeans and t-shirt kinda day for me…

I’ve teamed a boxy cat face t-shirt from TopShop with a boyfriend cut jean and a lowish heel patent studded shoe.  Being a shortie I’ve rolled and sewed the jeans to just above ankle length – as they are a bargain price pair from Primark a bit of customisation can make all the difference.  Plus a shorter length makes them much more flattering for the more petite girl.
